Behandelde denkers:
Karen Armstrong, Aurobindo Ghose
Karl Barth, Nikolaj Berdjajev, Diettrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Buber, Rudolf Bultmann

Feminism, Sexuality, and the Return of Religion
In contemporary continental philosophy, feminist theory and reflections on sexuality and gender rarely make contact with religion. Conversely, philosophy of religion seldom interacts with discourses in feminism, sexuality, and gender. In Feminism, Sexuality, and the Return of Religion, seven internationally recognized scholars tackle complicated questions provoked by the often stormy intersection of these powerful forces. Breaking down barriers as they extend the richness of each philosophical tradition, the essays in this book cover themes such as queer sexuality and religion, feminism and the gift, feminism and religious reform, and religion and diversity. Contributors include Helene Cixous, Sarah Coakley, Kelly Brown Douglas, Mark D. Jordan, Catherine Keller, Saba Mahmood, and Gianni Vattimo.

Faith, Rationality and the Passions
Faith, Rationality and the Passions presents a fresh and original examination of the relation of religious faith, philosophical rationality and the passions. Contributions see leading scholars refute the widely-held belief that religious Enlightenment forced passion and reason apart. Leading philosophical experts offer new research on the relation of faith, reason and the passions in classic and Enlightenment figures Overturns the widely-held presumption that the Enlightenment was responsible for creating a gulf between reason and passion Presents original and innovative research on the importance of the late-19th century creation of the category of 'emotion', and its striking difference from classic ideas of passion Brings together secular science and philosophy of emotion with philosophical theology to seek a new integration of belief, emotion and reason.

De Cruz, Helen, Johan de Smedt
A Natural History of Natural Theology - The Cognitive Science of Theology and Philosophy of Religion
Questions about the existence and attributes of God form the subject matter of natural theology, which seeks to gain knowledge of the divine by relying on reason and experience of the world. Arguments in natural theology rely largely on intuitions and inferences that seem natural to us, occurring spontaneously-at the sight of a beautiful landscape, perhaps, or in wonderment at the complexity of the cosmos-even to a nonphilosopher. In this book, Helen De Cruz and Johan De Smedt examine the cognitive origins of arguments in natural theology. They find that although natural theological arguments can be very sophisticated, they are rooted in everyday intuitions about purpose, causation, agency, and morality. Using evidence and theories from disciplines including the cognitive science of religion, evolutionary ethics, evolutionary aesthetics, and the cognitive science of testimony, they show that these intuitions emerge early in development and are a stable part of human cognition.

De Cruz and De Smedt analyze the cognitive underpinnings of five well-known arguments for the existence of God: the argument from design, the cosmological argument, the moral argument, the argument from beauty, and the argument from miracles. Finally, they consider whether the cognitive origins of these natural theological arguments should affect their rationality.

Fraenkel, Carlos
Philosophical Religions from Plato to Spinoza: Reason, Religion, and Autonomy
Many pagan, Jewish, Christian and Muslim philosophers from Antiquity to the Enlightenment made no meaningful distinction between philosophy and religion. Instead they advocated a philosophical religion, arguing that God is Reason and that the historical forms of a religious tradition serve as philosophy's handmaid to promote the life of reason among non-philosophers. Carlos Fraenkel provides the first account of this concept and traces its history back to Plato. He shows how Jews and Christians appropriated it in Antiquity, follows it through the Middle Ages in both Islamic and Jewish forms and argues that it underlies Spinoza's interpretation of Christianity. The main challenge to a philosophical religion comes from the modern view that all human beings are equally able to order their lives rationally and hence need no guidance from religion. Fraenkel's wide-ranging book will appeal to anyone interested in how philosophy has interacted with Jewish, Christian, and Muslim religious traditions.

Gutting, Gary
Over God.

Kearney, Richard
Anatheism. Returning to God After God
Has the passing of the old God paved the way for a new kind of religious project, a more responsible way to seek, sound, and love the things we call divine? Has the suspension of dogmatic certainties and presumptions opened a space in which we can encounter religious wonder anew? Situated at the split between theism and atheism, we now have the opportunity to respond in deeper, freer ways to things we cannot fathom or prove. Distinguished philosopher Richard Kearney calls this condition ana-theos, or God after God-a moment of creative "not knowing" that signifies a break with former sureties and invites us to forge new meanings from the most ancient of wisdoms. Anatheism refers to an inaugural event that lies at the heart of every great religion, a wager between hospitality and hostility to the stranger, the other--the sense of something "more." By analyzing the roots of our own anatheistic moment, Kearney shows not only how a return to God is possible for those who seek it but also how a more liberating faith can be born. Kearney begins by locating a turn toward sacred secularity in contemporary philosophy, focusing on Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Paul Ricoeur. He then marks "epiphanies" in the modernist masterpieces of James Joyce, Marcel Proust, and Virginia Woolf. Kearney concludes with a discussion of the role of theism and atheism in conflict and peace, confronting the distinction between sacramental and sacrificial belief or the God who gives life and the God who takes it away. Accepting that we can never be sure about God, he argues, is the only way to rediscover a hidden holiness in life and to reclaim an everyday divinity.

Lucie-Smith, A.
Narrative Theology and Moral Theology. The Infinite Horizon
Moral thinking today finds itself stranded between the particular and the universal. Alasdair Maclntyre's work on narrative, discussed here along with that of Stanley Hauerwas and H. T. Engelhardt, aims to undo the perceived damage done by the Enlightenment by returning to narrative and abandoning the illusion of a disembodied reason that claims to be able give a coherent explanation for everything. It is precisely this - a theory that holds good for all cases - that John Rawls proposed, drawing on the heritage of Emmanuel Kant. Who is right? Must universality be abandoned? Must we only think about morality in terms that are relative, bound by space and time? Alexander Lucie-Smith attempts to answer these questions by examining the nature of narrative itself as well as the particular narratives of Rawls and St Augustine. Bound and rooted as they are in history and personal experience, narratives nevertheless strain at the limits imposed on them. It is Lucie-Smith's contention that each narrative that points to a lived morality exists against the background of an infinite horizon; and thus it is that the particular and the rooted can also make us aware of the universal and unchanging, van euro 65.00

Mawson, T.J.
Belief in God: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion
"Belief in God" answers two questions: what, if anything, is it that Jews, Christians, and Muslims are agreeing about when they join in claiming that there is a God; and what, if any, prospects are there for rationally defending or attacking this claim? In the context of a sustained argument for particular answers to these questions, Tim Mawson tackles many of the most prominent topics in the philosophy of religion. He argues that those who believe that there is a God are best interpreted as believing that there is a being who is essentially personal, transcendent, immanent, omnipotent, omniscient, eternal, perfectly free, perfectly good, and necessary; and non-essentially creator of the world and value; revealer of Himself; and offerer of everlasting life. Having explored the meaning and consistency of this conception of God in the first half of the book, Mawson goes on to consider whether or not belief or the absence of belief in such a God might be the sort of thing that does not rationally require argument and, if not, what the criteria for a good argument for or against such a God's existence might be. Having established some criteria, he uses them to evaluate specific arguments for and against the existence of such a God. He looks at the Argument to Design; the Cosmological Argument; the Ontological Argument; the Argument from Religious Experience; the Argument from Apparent Miracles; the Problem of Evil; and Pascal's Wager. Finally, he explores the relation between faith and reason. In the course of his argument, Mawson makes striking new claims and defends or attacks established positions in new ways. His conversational style, lively wit, and enlightening examples make "Belief in God" as pleasurable as it is instructive and thought-provoking. It makes an ideal text for beginning undergraduate courses and for anyone thinking about these most important of questions.

An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion
An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion provides a broad overview of the topics which are at the forefront of discussion in contemporary philosophy of religion. Prominent views and arguments from both historical and contemporary authors are discussed and analyzed. The book treats all of the central topics in the field, including the coherence of the divine attributes, theistic and atheistic arguments, faith and reason, religion and ethics, miracles, human freedom and divine providence, science and religion, and immortality. In addition it addresses topics of significant importance that similar books often ignore, including the argument for atheism from hiddenness, the coherence of the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation, and the relationship between religion and politics. It will be a valuable accompaniment to undergraduate and introductory graduate-level courses.

Panikkar, R.
The Rhythm of Being. The Gifford Lectures
Twenty years after he delivered the prestigious Gifford Lectures, Raimon Panikkar's The Rhythm of Being is finally published. It is a tour de force of profound insights gleaned from a lifetime of connecting the worlds of religion, philosophy, science, and revelation.

In describing his work, Panikkar says,"I am not trying to say something new. I do not wish to contribute to the alienation produced by the obsessive search for novelties. My originality, if any, will be that of going to the origins - not to do archeology, or to make anachronistic interpretations…but to perform the task of a latter day hunter gatherer, re-collecting life from the stupendous field of human experience on Earth. ... The ideas here expressed are the fruit not of a dialectical mind making use of induction or deduction from the sources of ancients and contemporaries, but, having paid respect to them, they are the fruit of a personal experience which has been later checked and criticized by the wisdom of all those whom I have had the privilege to hear or to read."

Phillips, D. Z.
Religion and Friendly Fire. Examining Assumptions in Contemporary Philosophy of Religion
In locating friendly fire in contemporary philosophy of religion, D.Z. Phillips shows that more harm can be done to religion by its philosophical defenders than by its philosophical despisers. Friendly fire is the result of an uncritical acceptance of empiricism, and Phillips argues that we need to examine critically the claims that individual consciousness is the necessary starting point from which we have to argue: for the existence of an external world and the reality of God; that God is a person without a body, a pure consciousness; and that to assent to a religious belief is essentially to assign a truth value to a proposition independent of any confessional context. When these products of friendly fire are avoided, we arrive at a new understanding of belief, trust, the soul, and refuse to say more or less than we know about the realities of human life in the service of religious apologetics.

Rijst, Rene van der ( red)
Filosoferen over God

Sherwood, Y. & K. Hart (eds)
Derrida and Religion, Other Testaments
Over the course of the last decade, the writings of Derrida have come to exercise considerable influence among scholars of religious studies, theology, and biblical studies. Just as Derrida altered much of the landscape in literary studies and philosophy in the 1960s through the 1980s, it is now the religious map that is being reconfigured. The key concepts that have emerged from Derrida's texts - such as the gift, apocalypse, hospitality, messianism, sacrifice, and the secret - have wrought changes in the way that scholars approach biblical texts, comparative religious studies, and religious violence, for instance, as well as the way they understand basic religious themes such as myth, creation, forgiveness, one-ness, and multiplicity. "Derrida and Religion: Other Testaments "represents the most comprehensive attempt to date to explore, adapt, and test Derrida's contributions and influence on the study of theology, biblical studies, and the philosophy of religion. With over twenty original essays from highly-respected scholars such as John Caputo, Daniel Boyarin, Edith Wyschogrod, Tim Beal, and Gil Anidjar, "Derrida and Religion "will quickly become the 'locus classicus' for those interested in the increasingly vibrant work on religion and deconstruction and postmodernism. A substantial introduction by the editors, Yvonne Sherwood and Kevin Hart, provides an accessible overview of the issues and themes central to the discussion of religion and deconstruction that will be as useful for students as it is insightful for scholars. The volume also includes a lengthy interview with Derrida conducted by the editors joined by John Caputo.

Wildman, W. J.
Religious Philosophy as Multidisciplinary Comparative Inquiry. Envisioning a Future for the Philosophy of Religion
What can philosophy contribute to the study of religion? This book argues that the study of religion needs philosophy in the form of multidisciplinary comparative inquiry. Contradicting the current tendency to regard philosophical reflection and the academic study of religion as independent endeavors best kept apart, Wesley J. Wildman brings them together, offering a broader vision than that of traditional “philosophy of religion” and surmounting many of its difficulties. His newer conception of “religious philosophy” is well suited to the modern, multicultural, secular university. Through multidisciplinary comparative inquiry, religious philosophy allows for a variety of approaches—from historical and analytical work to evocative description and theoretical evaluation of truth claims—and both secular and religious thinkers participate. The tasks and varieties of religious philosophy as they arc across the world’s religions and philosophies are discussed along with religious philosophy’s modern and postmodern contexts. Wildman’s thoughtful and thought-provoking book will be essential reading for all those concerned with the study of religion, present and future.
